In 1865, Bartholdi conceived the idea for a statue that would commemorate the Franco-American alliance of 1778. Twenty-one years later, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in New York City. July 18, 1985 the USPS honored Frederic Auguste Bartholdi with the 22 cent Federal Hall National Memorial Stamp. He was a French sculptor who is best known for designing Liberty Enlightening the World, commonly known as the Statue of Liberty.
