The "1994 Corncob Tailgate Party" is a famous piece of collegiate lore surrounding Northern Illinois University (NIU). Spurred by free promotional corn from DeKalb, the wild student section famously began throwing hundreds of cobs through the air, forcing the school to ban kegs and end tailgating 30 minutes before kickoff. This is a fascinating piece of Tennessee Volunteers memorabilia because it appears to be a promotional hand fan from a personal appearance by Doug Atkins in August 1994, and it is personally signed by Atkins and Jeff Powell. The event was in Hermitage Tenn. 7th annual Pigskin-Tailgate Party. Atkins played college football for the Tennessee Volunteers under head coach Robert Neyland. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jeff Powell, a Nashville native who became a Tennessee football folk hero during the 1985 season. He was a former track All-American who walked onto the Vols football team and earned lasting fame for his dramatic 60-yard touchdown run against Miami in the 1986 Sugar Bowl. This is an amazing, very rare and unique Doug Atkins and Jeff Powell Dual Signed Vintage 1994 Corncob Tailgate Party Tennessee Volunteers/Big Orange Handheld Fan . Approximately 13”x9”. Bold black dual full pristine signatures. Note imperfections on the fan back, sold as is. Athlon Sports Collectibles Certificate of Authenticity.
