Gary Rutledge was a freshman in 1970 when freshmen were not eligible for varsity play, was redshirted in 1971, backed up Terry Davis in 1972, was starter in 1973, and had an injured shoulder and played only sparingly in 1974. Alabama’s record in the three years he played was 32-4 with three Southeastern Conference championships, and he was the starting quarterback for the 1973 national championship season. Gary is part of an Alabama athletics family. His father, Jack was a scholar shipped baseball player for the Crimson Tide, and his brother, Jeff, followed him as quarterback of the 1978 Bama national championship team.
