After redshirting his first year in 2015, Mike Weber took over as the starting running back role in 2016, replacing Ezekiel Elliott who had graduated. At the end of the season, he was named the Thompson–Randle El Freshman of the Year and second-team All-Big Ten. On December 16, 2018, Weber announced that he would forgo his final year of eligibility and declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.
