Hugh McElhenny was a first round pick of the 49ers in the 1952 NFL Draft, and made an immediate impression as a rookie and won the Rookie of the Year award. He joined the newly formed Vikings in 1961 through the expansion draft. That year, he led the team in rushing and had seven total touchdowns, including his first punt return touchdown since his rookie season. He was invited to his sixth Pro Bowl following the season.
