Jimmy Piersall became a pro baseball player at age 18, signing a contract with the Boston Red Sox in 1948. In a reserve role with the New York Mets, he played briefly under manager Casey Stengel. In the fifth inning of the June 23 game against the Phillies, Piersall hit the 100th home run of his career. He ran around the bases in the correct order, but facing backwards as he made the circuit.
